چکیده

This paper examines whether UK firms that locate their R&D activity in the USA benefit more than other UK firms from knowledge spillovers originating from US R&D. Patent data provides a firm-level measure of the location of innovative activity, which enables the identification of knowledge spillovers associated with "technology sourcing". Our identification strategy helps to address various problems usually encountered when measuring knowledge spillovers. Our results also raise interesting questions for policy, for example an R&D tax credit that encourages firms to repatriate foreign R&D activity may be partly counterproductive. ∗Acknowledgement: The authors would like to thank Nick Bloom, Richard Blundell, Steve Bond and Michele Cincera for helpful comments. The data was developed with funding from the Leverhulme Trust. †Institute for Fiscal Studies and University College London ([email protected], [email protected]) ‡Centre for Economic Performance and London School of Economics

How Special Is the Special Relationship? Using the Impact of U.S. R&D Spillovers on U.K. Firms as a Test of Technology Sourcing

In order to implement our empirical strategy we need to measure three types of information: the location of firms’ innovative activity, firms’ productivity performance, and the domestic and foreign spillover pools available to companies. We use data from the US Patent Office (USPTO), firm accounting information, and OECD data on industry level R&D expenditure, to measure each of these respectiv...

How Special is the Special Relationship? Using the Impact of R&D Spillovers on UK Firms As a Test of Technology Sourcing

How much does US-based R&D benefit other countries and through what mechanisms? We test the "technology sourcing" hypothesis that foreign research labs located on US soil tap into US R&D spillovers and improve home country productivity. Using panels of UK and US firms matched to patent data we show that UK firms who had established a high proportion of US-based inventors by 1990 benefited dispr...

Complementarity between internal knowledge creation and external knowledge sourcing in developing countries

In developing countries, innovation is to a large extent a matter of adoption of advanced technologies but also of conducting internal R&D to be able to better assimilate existing technologies. This paper, based on firm level data from 24 developing countries, examines the roles of internal R&D efforts (MAKE) and external technology sourcing (BUY) in fostering productivity in manufacturing firm...

An Empirical Analysis of Software-as-a-Service Development Mode and Its Impacts on Firm Performance

We address the following two research questions: (1) under what circumstances will firms prefer internal SaaS development to external sourcing? and (2) how does the SaaS development mode affect firm performance? We examine the SaaS development actions in the computer industry (SIC code 737) from 2003 to 2012. The preliminary analysis results suggest that firms with large amount of working capit...
